Samsung's New Commercial Might Shake Some People Up

Ouch. Samsung goes after a few things here. First, they attack fanboys and people staying in line to buy the iPhone. Next, they make claims about the iPhone 4S battery (even though it's better than the Galaxy S 2 battery). Then they go on to make remarks about screen size and 4G connectivity.

To someone sitting back, they might say "wow, that Galaxy S2 is fantastic!". Samsung even borrowed design elements from the iPhone to try to make your switch easier (of course, they're being sued, and losing, everywhere for doing it). However, what happens if you break down what they're saying? That leads to finding a few faults in their logic, all made in the name of marketing.

For example, the Galaxy S 2 has a 4.5 inch screen. That's a full inch bigger than the iPhone screen. Bigger's better, right? Wrong. Larger screen size often makes the devices awkward to use. Besides that, the Galaxy S 2 actually has a lower resolution screen than the iPhone. That means you see the pixels more, and the image is more grainy. When you consider size, sharpness, and picture quality, there's no phone screen like the iPhone's.

And how about that 4G? If you have it on your phone, chances are you've mostly used your phone with it off. If you haven't turned it off, you're draining your battery life considerably for no reason. 4G hasn't become widespread yet, and if it's not LTE 4G, it's not going to be used in the future anyway, so the phone's not ready to be used long term. 4G LTE may start spreading out in a year or two, so next year, phones should probably have 4G. Now? 4G is sparse, and it's a huge drain on the battery. You're not missing out without it, in fact, there's a good chance you're better off.

As for standing in line for a iPhone, iPad, or any other new Apple hardware? I've never done it. But I can see why people would like doing it. Camp outside, meet new people, talk about the new tech, hang out with friends and new friends, watch the mystery unfold while waiting in line, and be the first person with the latest and greatest new technology.

It's harsh to say, but I think the real reason Samsung made this commercial is that no one cares about their products enough to line up for days to get it. Who would? Their mobile devices are wholly unimpressive. They have lower definition screens, fewer apps, Android fragmentation, few updates, bad battery life, and an unoriginal design. Maybe they should get the geniuses in marketing, and get them to help the design team wake up. In the mean time, I've got to say, this is actually a great commercial. But, the moment anyone does some research, they'll find that the Samsung Galaxy line really isn't that special. But that's up for the consumer to decide, and this commercial may make people who previously wouldn't have considered a Samsung phone look into getting one. That's exactly what a commercial is supposed to do.
